To be honest, I struggle a little with converting photos to black and white. I like the face to be bright but I don't like when it's so bright that you can't see the details.
I've recently started using Adobe Lightroom and I really like it a lot. It gives you a lot of control over the photo. You can download a free 30-day trial right now.
I like when you convert to grey scale and then use a couple of the sliders to brighten it up a little bit.
