For the love of Dora.

You know that old adage that if your mom tells you you can't have something, you want it all the more? I am now convinced that it is entirely true.

I have banned "Dora" and as a result Michal and Kenna are now obsessed with the show. I know that Dora teaches children Spanish -- trust me, Michal and Kenna have tried explaining that to me numerous times -- but I just don't care for the show.

Don't get me wrong . . . I am not opposed to children's television. I have to admit that I downright adore "Charlie and Lola." The show is clever and well-written and Lola is always dressed to kill. Plus, you just can't beat a brother and sister with a good relationship -- and darling British accents. The girls like Charlie and Lola but I guess if I want them to love it I'm going to have to tell them they can't watch it.

Either that or get Lola a backpack and a map.

  1. I love Charlie and Lola!
Kerri loved Dora at age three (and Diego too) but she outgrew them at 4. So there is hope.
Of course, now she is into all things princesses, girly and sparkly. Her favorite show right now is Ni Hao Kai Lin (not sure I spelled that right).

  2. "Dora is everywhere!" That's what my girls say. They are all about Dora. I do my best to keep her away too. I also love Charlie and Lola, but the girls only tolerate the show. I have a blog Lovey Award for you over at my site. Stop by sometime and pick it up at http://lifesabeach4us.blogspot.com

  3. Such beautiful photos!! My girl loved her some Dora for quite a while when she was younger! Now she likes watching SpongeBob sometimes and that show drives me crazy!

Have a fun week. Hope spring is one the way there!

  4. Lovely photos of the girls!

We never got into Dora, or any cartoon for that matter. From the very beginning, "real people tv" has always been popular at our house. Camille loved Lawrence Welk and now is a huge fan of High School Musical and even Hairspray. Sesame Street is also still popular at our house. I've never heard of Charlie and Lola...

  5. Faye,

Charlie and Lola is a British cartoon and it's also a series of really wonderful books.

Lola is five and terribly precocious and Charlie is her older brother. I actually like the books better than the show and our very favorite Charlie and Lola book is "I Will Never Not Ever Eat a Tomato." The books, and the show, are just plain clever.

M&K strongly preferred shows with "real people" for a long time. Their current very favorite show is also a "real people" show -- "How It's Made." The only drawback to the show is that Viagra is the show's sponsor and the ads are a bit inappropriate, as you can imagine.

I love that she likes Lawrence Welk! I didn't know it was still even on TV.

What is it that you do not like about Dora?

  7. Anonymous10:52 AM

I am the same way about Barney, which means I am probably doomed! Not too crazy about Dora either, but maybe she'll be gone by the time they are ready for that. My girls are into Sesame Street and Yo Gabba Gabba.

  8. I love that Dora is spunky and self-assured. I like the multicultural aspects of the show and that Dora speaks Spanish and teaches a couple Spanish words each episode.

What I don't care for is how the show is written -- Dora speaks in fragments -- for example, the ubiquitous "Swiper, no swiping." I don't like the excessive repetition, which I know kids like but just drives me crazy. But most of all I don't like how Dora and Boots always shout and encourage the kids watching the show to shout at the TV too.

  9. Oh, if you figure out how to stop children from liking the most annoying shows, please let us know! We're expecting a son in April and I dread when he starts becoming obsessed with cartoon characters! My nephew isn't even 2 yet and is really into all things character (especially clothes). I notice you dress the girls really nicely and I am going to be the same way with our son. His father and I have already completely banned all cartoon character clothing from our house, much to the dismay of his grandparents. ha.ha. But, I can't stand it when kids are dressed from head to toe in cartoon character clothing. I'm not completely heartless. I do love a good dress up outfit and everyone has to have a few Disney pieces to wear at Disney, but not for every day attire. The worst offenders are those hideous velcro shoes that seem to come in every tacky cartoon character on t.v. Good luck with the Dora ban! :)
And, what's up with the Viagara commercials coming on every 5 seconds on the Discovery Channel? I had noticed that too!

  10. Couldn't stand barney, nor Dora/Diego/Blue's Clues. Re Dora, its the pitch of her voice that just grates on my nerves. So glad I'm not the only one.

Never watched C & L, thanks for the tip!

    Kind regards from Miami,

    Carol and Taylor

Kristi- that is so funny. I also love C & L and Sophie is not the biggest fan of it, I think she is tired of me saying "look at those cute clothes, pj's, blankets, etc. The fabric choices are terrific. We just started reading the books and she finally said she wanted to watch the show the other day, and I was so happy. We are very into the Imagination Movers and Calliou, which has way too much whining from a 4 year old.

We love, love, love Charlie and Lola!

And I love the girls' hats - - may I ask where you found them?

  13. The hats are by Screaming Beauty. Many kid's boutiques carry them. They have a list of retailers here: http://www.shopscreamingbeauty.com/

M&K had headbands by the same company that they wore on Adoption Day in China. They still actually wear them every once in awhile.

  14. Oh, I'm sooo looking forward to hearing the girls and their best British accents. ha ha. We're going through a rough Spongebob phase but luckily we don't get too much of the Dora anymore. Personally, I loathed Ruby. She treats her brother terribly and always takes advantage of him because of his age/knowledge. Great role model!

  15. Simply beautiful photos!
