Two Things . . .

We went to my cousin Bonnie's daughter's birthday party recently. Sage turned five in May and celebrated the occasion with a Dr. Seuss dress-up party. The party was actually the day before I left for Hawaii so, in the midst of packing, I made the girls "Thing 1" and "Thing 2" costumes. Kenna is "Thing 1" and Michal is "Thing 2."

The girls both had a great time at the party and got to take their first whack at a pinata. Once the unbreakable pinata-of-steel was ripped apart by an adult, it was funny to see Michal and Kenna stand and watch as most of the other kids dove on the floor to grab candy and toys and shove them in their goody bag. I am somewhat relieved that throwing yourself on the floor to gather up pinata loot is not an innate skill. I have no doubt though that my duo has more than gotten the idea and will be throwing themselves on the floor with vigor the next time there's a pinata at a party.

The picture of the four kids -- my cousin's daughter and son and my two -- cracks me up. Not one of them is actually looking at the camera. Michal and Kenna are at least sporting their newly-perfected fake smiles and they all did patiently sit there while I took the picture.

Happy Birthday Sage! Thanks for inviting us to celebrate with you.
